Periodic tenancy: the end date must be at least 21 days after the notice is given. If you post it, the notice counts as given on the 4th working day after posting; if you put it in the letterbox or on the door, on the 2nd working day; if you e-mail it after 5 pm, on the next working day. Use the calculator above the document.

Fixed term of more than 90 days: this notice must reach the landlord no earlier than 90 days and no later than 21 days before the fixed term ends. Otherwise the tenancy carries on as a periodic tenancy.

Leaving before a fixed term ends is a different situation. This notice does not cover it; talk to your landlord or Tenancy Services first.

Sign it. The notice must be in writing, identify the premises, give the date you will vacate, and be signed by you or your agent.

Several tenants: if one tenant gives notice, check with the others first. Talk to Tenancy Services if you are unsure.
