The rules (Ministry of Finance) • Who: parents or legal guardians open it for a girl child from birth until she turns 10; one account per girl, at most two girls per family (twins or triplets excepted). • Deposits: at least ₹250 a year, in multiples of ₹50, up to ₹1,50,000 in a financial year; deposits are made for 15 years from the date of opening. • Interest: calculated every month and added to the account at the end of each financial year; the rate is notified every quarter by the Ministry of Finance. • Rate: 8.2% a year — unchanged for October–December 2026 (Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs, office memorandum of 30.09.2026). Check at the start of the year and every quarter. • Education: up to 50% of the balance at the end of the previous financial year, once she is 18 or has passed class 10, against an admission offer or fee slip. • Maturity: 21 years from the date of opening; early closure for her marriage after 18, from one month before to three months after the marriage. • The account is managed by the parent or guardian until she is 18, and can be moved between post offices and banks anywhere in India.

Never skip a year: at least ₹250 keeps the account active.
Keep the passbook and every deposit receipt in one place.
Use the money for her education and her future, as she chooses.
A savings plan, not financial advice. Interest is reset every quarter; this plan assumes today's rate for all 21 years. Check at the start of the year.
